My role
I aimed to build a seamless experience that turns commuting into a simple, enjoyable journey for everyone. On this project I worked as UX researcher, UX designer, UI designer, motion designer and graphic designer.
The problem
Getting from A to B should not be a gamble
Urban commuters face unreliable train schedules, a lack of real-time updates, and difficulty finding the best route from point A to point B.
Goal: an app that gives the best train options between two stations, plus live train status and real-time alerts for delays or cancellations, so people can plan their journeys and travel with ease.

Research
Listening first, with a mix of methods
Foundational research began with four users aged 20 to 35, using a set of questions to understand their needs through qualitative research. I then widened it with a mixed-method approach that combined qualitative and quantitative insights.
Do you travel on a daily basis?
What is your primary source of traveling?
How do you check the local train schedule?
Which app do you use to check the train schedule?
How do you plan to travel?
User interviews · qualitative
15 daily commuters
Office workers, students and tourists, to understand frustrations and behavior in real-world scenarios.
Users check schedules several times a day but struggle with navigation.
Tourists and first-time users found the app confusing without onboarding.
Regular users wanted the live location of the train.
Platform change notifications were often delayed, causing confusion.
Onsite observation · shadowing
Watching at the station
Observing how people use the app in real time at railway stations.
People got confused about which platform to take.
People did not trust the train location shown in the app.
When a train was delayed or cancelled, they got frustrated and switched to Google Maps for alternatives.
Survey · quantitative
500+ app users
An online survey asked what people wanted most.
Want live location updates to check train status72%
Want a favorite routes option for frequent journeys60%
Want announcements on scheduled trains, megablocks and cancellations50%
Insights
Personas and pain points
The persona profile keeps the team focused on user needs and challenges, so the product ends up both useful and enjoyable. Pain points came straight from what people said and what I saw at the stations.
Hard to navigate
People check schedules several times a day but struggle with the interface.
No onboarding
Tourists and first-time users found the app confusing.
Location not trusted
At the station, people doubted the train location shown in the app.
Late alerts
Platform change notifications often arrived late, causing confusion.
Delays send people away
When a train was delayed or cancelled, riders switched to Google Maps.
Ideation
From storyboard to wireframes
A storyboard put a hypothetical commute on paper and helped decide which actions the app had to support. From there I moved through low-fidelity wireframes, high-fidelity wireframes and a clickable prototype.

The solution
A simple journey: pick a start, pick a destination, see trains
Select your starting station, choose your destination, and instantly get a list of trains with their real-time locations. Four parts of the app carry the experience.
Introducing Yatri
Yatri is your one-stop solution for navigating Mumbai's bustling local train network with ease. Whether you ride every day or only now and then, it gives you a smooth, dependable experience.
What I found→What I designed
72% wanted live location updates→Live location with a moving train icon and time to the next station
60% wanted favorite routes→Favorite routes on the home screen
50% wanted announcements about trains and megablocks→A news and announcements bar for delays, platform changes and alternate routes
People were unsure which platform to take→Platform numbers and timings shown prominently
People did not trust the train location→A refresh button and a count of riders who set alerts for the train
Delays and cancellations pushed riders to other apps→Alternate route suggestions and alerts for delays
Home: decide in seconds
The top of the home screen lets people pick how they commute: Local Train, Metro, Mono, Bus or Ferry.
User-centric layout. Helps people find their starting point and the right travel information quickly.
Proximity indicator. Shows the nearest station and the estimated distance.
Favorite routes. One tap to saved routes for frequent commutes.
Train alerts. Notifications on delays or schedule updates for saved trains.
Related to locals. Direct links to ticket fares, the Mumbai rail map, station amenities and railway penalties.
Live location: see the train, trust the plan
Riders did not trust the location the old app showed, so this screen is built to earn that trust.
Map integration. A moving train icon and the estimated arrival at the next station, such as "Arriving in 5 minutes".
Journey timeline. A red progress line highlights the current station.
Social context. Shows how many users set alerts for the train, for example "53 users", which builds confidence.
Interactive features. A refresh button for real-time updates and a share option for coordinating with others.
Minimal and clear. Little text, with platform numbers and timings prominent so nobody boards the wrong train.
News and announcements: building trust through real-time updates
The News and Announcements section keeps people informed with real-time updates such as delays, platform changes and alternate routes. A clean, visible announcement bar gives quick access to critical information, and personalized updates build trust. By reducing stress and offering actions people can take, it makes travel feel reliable.
Explore: designing joyful journeys
The Explore section combines function with emotion. Features like Famous Places and Mumbai Foods match what people are curious about, and vibrant visuals with simple navigation invite them to look around. It turns the app from a travel tool into something people enjoy opening.
Design matters as much as function. To get people engaging with the product, we started with the Explore tab, which lets users interact with content, and added a referral feature that encourages them to share the app.
