A calmer way to commute on Mumbai local trains
Yatri gives commuters real-time train updates, alternate routes and digital ticketing, whether they ride daily, now and then, or are new to the city.
Problem statement
Urban commuters face unreliable train schedules, a lack of real-time updates, and difficulty finding the best route from point A to point B.
The goal: an app that gives the best train options between two stations, plus live train status and alerts for delays or cancellations, so people can plan and travel with ease.

What I saw and heard
- 15 daily commuters interviewed: office workers, students and tourists.
- Riders check schedules several times a day but struggle with navigation.
- First-time users and tourists found the app confusing without onboarding.
- At stations, people were unsure which platform to take, doubted the shown train location, and fell back to Google Maps when trains were delayed.
Four screens that carry the journey
Pick a start, pick a destination, and get a list of trains with their real-time locations.
Home
Choose Local Train, Metro, Mono, Bus or Ferry. See the nearest station and distance, favorite routes, train alerts, fares, the rail map and station amenities.
Live location
A moving train icon on the map, time to the next station, and a journey timeline with a progress line. A count of riders who set alerts adds trust.
News and announcements
Delays, platform changes and alternate routes in a clear announcement bar, so people stay informed and calm.
Explore
Famous places and Mumbai foods turn a travel tool into something people enjoy opening.

Live train locations go public
Live train locations for Western Railway were unveiled at the Yatri event at Mumbai Division CSMT. Commuters can view and share a train's location straight from the schedule list.
